The Challenge:
In partnership of the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the J. Paul Getty Trust has asked MCo to manage the design and implementation of a national multi-disciplinary education initiative tied to the upcoming millennium and the exploration of the planet Mars.

An official White House Millennium Youth Initiative, the “Mars Millennium Project” engaged students in an exploratory project based on the disciplines of art and science, complemented by the use of technology.

The Solution:
As the project manager, MCo was responsible for all aspects of the initiative including developing the activity kits that guided the teams of participants, recruiting an extensive network of cooperating organizations, creating advertisements and promotions to generate participation, providing ongoing support to participants, and coordinating showcases of student work at national and community events.

Former First Lady, now Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton launched the initiative at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The launch included an address from the project’s honorary chair, former U.S. Senator and astronaut, John Glenn.

The Results:
Students across the country worked with arts and science educators, artists, scientists and engineers to design a livable community for the planet Mars in which 100 people could begin living in the year 2030. Issues of human survival were considered along with the aesthetic design of communities including cultural and community identity, and social and humanities attributes.
